Rehabilitation of the Cambodian Railway is Impoverishing Affected Families

A problematic aid project in Cambodia has violated the rights of affected people and left many families mired in debt and deeper poverty, Bridges Across Borders Cambodia said in a report released Monday.
The report, DERAILED, reviews the resettlement process and impacts of the Rehabilitation of the Cambodian Railway Project, which aims to restore the country’s 650 kilometres of railway infrastructure.

On February 13th, Bridges Across Borders Cambodia will present the findings of its forthcoming report, DERAILED, A Study on the Resettlement Impacts of the Rehabilitation of the Cambodian Railway. The Project, predominantly financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and AusAID, is restoring Cambodia's 650 kilometers of railway infrastructure. More than 4000 families living near the railway lines stand to be affected by the Project. The report assesses the extent to which the Project's resettlement component has complied with international human rights law obligations and the ADB Policy on Involuntary Resettlement.

Boeung Kak Lake Residents Score Landmark Human Rights Victory

Bridges Across Borders Cambodia sincerely welcomed the delivery of the first batch of land titles to residents of Boeung Kak Lake on Saturday. Land titles were distributed to 254 Boeung Kak households by Phnom Penh Governor Kep Chuktema on September 10th, coinciding with International Human Rights Day. For the families who received titles on Saturday, it marked a successful end to a five-year struggle to defend their homes and land. The titles were issued in accordance with a decree signed by Prime Minister Hun Sen on August 17th, which ordered that 12.44 hectares be cut out of the Boueng Kak development project and land titles provided to the roughly 800 families inside.
